Years ago when I began this journey, I reached out to a photographer to see if I could pick her brain. We met at a coffee shop in Greenwood and talked like we had already known each other. She does stunning work, has the biggest heart, and is just plain cool. Her name is Cat Satre (if you have researched wedding photographers at some point you have probably seen her work). At that point in my business, I wanted to be her, I think I still do :). Between then and now she has stopped photographing families and is solely focused on weddings.
Cat did the wedding photography for The Browns. She referred them on to me for family photos at their farm. When they told me that they wanted to have photos with their horses and dogs I was 1000% in. I was so excited. Bring me all the animals please! She also explained to me that she wanted a session that was: “Laid back! We just want you to capture us all in our element, which is here on our property.”
One thing that stood out to me about this session was that the kids were being kids. I want to reassure all of you that have children that no session works perfectly or goes quite as you imagined it. There has to be some kind of faux pas. In this session, the youngest wanted nothing to do with me and sitting still, while the two middle boys were being the biggest goofballs. I promised them that they would still end up with beautiful images. And guess what, they did. These images represent them as a family unit. They show the personalities of each of the kids in a way that a “smiling portrait” won’t.
If there’s one thing I want you to have as a takeaway, it’s this: during a family session, don’t worry about kids and behavior, I LOVE kids and am a therapist. I know that this is part of the gig. Just focus on having fun and being playful.
Thank you for inviting me to your family farm and trusting me to capture a few cherished memories.
Thanks for stopping by!
